Catching Flies

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! - Psalm 119:103

There’s a saying about catching flies,
Which to how christians should talk applies,
And if we let it govern our speech,
We will always practice what we preach:

“You catch more flies with honey, by far,
Than you’ll ever catch with vinegar.”

So keep your heart with honey filled,
And onto your tongue it will be spilled
With everyone with whom you converse,
Whether with the good, the bad, or the worse,
And the sweetness of the words you say
May keep some soul from going astray,
Or lead a lost soul to Calvary,
Or make a friend of an enemy,
Or ease the pain of a breaking heart,
Or keep a life from falling apart,
Or bring comfort to a troubled breast,
Or put animosities to rest,
Or lighten the burden another bears,
Or entertain angels unawares.

Honey of speech is love; vinegar is ill will;
So of God’s words of love, beside to drink your fill.

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in ask things, which is the head, even Christ. Ephesians 4:15
