John Berners Barnwell was born September 20 1756 and in April 1776 married Jane Hay Cuthbert, a daughter of Dr James Cuthbert. Her two brothers, James and John both fought on the American side. No info on "Berners" as he was called. He inherited his fathers lands and appears in the 1790 census owning 43 slaves, and in 1800 as having 13, and in 1810 his estate is said to have 25. He did not serve on the vstry as his fatherdid, but he did own a pew #27in the church. He seems to have died before 1810. In April 1811 the wardens of the church were instructed to purchase two lots formerly sold to John for $260 "sold under execution" against him. The date of his wifes death is also unknown. They had 9 Children.
